Port Kembla Surf Boat Launch

NSW Ports has funded an iconic new surf boat for the Port Kembla Surf Live Saving Club (SLSC), which officially launched the vessel into the waves today.

The new eight-metre boat will be used for training and competition by volunteer surf live savers in national surf events and to inspire young people to stay safe in the water.

Trevor Brown from NSW Ports said the business is proud to be the primary sponsor of the historic Port Kembla club, as part of its commitment to the people and businesses of the region, alongside support for local school programs, sporting clubs, vocational training, and community grants.

“As managers of Port Kembla, a key infrastructure asset and international trade gateway for the Illawarra, we’re not only invested in the region’s strong economic future but in its thriving local community as well,” Mr Brown said.

“Port Kembla’s dedicated volunteer lifesavers are out patrolling the 6.6km beach – the largest in the Wollongong area – from September to April each year to help ensure it’s safe and able to be enjoyed by all.

“We’re thrilled to continue our sponsorship of the club with the delivery of a new surf boat that is already inspiring junior members coming through the life saving ranks.”

Port Kembla SLSC President David Erskine said Port Kembla played an integral role in the community with many club members either living near, or working at, the port.

“I thank NSW Ports for its continued support of the club, which helps tremendously with our community engagement efforts and membership recruitment,” Mr Erksine said.

“I’m also incredibly humbled to have the new boat named after me. While I currently hold the role of club president, every volunteer deserves to be acknowledged, as their ongoing commitment to the club and our community is extraordinary.

“The boat’s maiden voyage at the 2022 Australian Surf Rowers League Open saw our women’s team win a bronze medal and the men’s team place 8th in Australia. These outstanding results are already motivating people to engage with our club.”

In 2020, NSW Ports announced its ongoing commitment to supporting Port Kembla’s volunteer surf life savers, with an extended contract that will take our partnership with the Port Kembla SLSC to a milestone 20 years.

Port Kembla delivers $543 million in gross regional product to the Illawarra and supports local jobs, with 99 per cent of the port’s workforce living in surrounding communities.
